Text Box: Many fires occur in kitchens where appliances are left on and unattended. Not only do people forget, but people who are visually impaired have difficulty seeing if an appliance is left on or not? What about children, how will they know if something is left on that could pose a threat? So we as, what could significantly reduce the problem of forgetfulness and difficulty in regards to using appliances safely? A simple reminder, which is what we have proposed in our solution statement below.

Text Box: The Solution
The solution is to apply sensors to appliances, specifically electrical appliances that commonly are hot or have potential to cause damage. When these appliances are left unattended, the built– sensor will make an audible sound when motion is detected at a distance of 3ft, notifying the appliance operator that someone– possibly a child, is approaching the hot appliance. Just as a baby monitor relays a babies’ cries and sounds to his/her mother. The proposed solution is not only suitable for keeping children safe, but adults as well. For instance, if someone is visually impaired and is living alone, the portable appliance sensor can be placed on the object of concern ( stoves, irons, heaters). If these items become hot or if the sensor detects a change in temperature it will sound off before any damage is done.
