Project Focus

A lack of answers is part of what makes

sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) so

frightening. SIDS is the sudden and

unexplained death of an infant who is

younger than 1 year old. Researchers

estimate that SIDS is the cause of about

2,500 infant deaths each year and

therefore, presents a serious problem in

today’s society. Creating a device that

monitors the infant while sleeping will aid in

reducing the infant mortality rate due to SIDS.

Solution Statement: A device that will help reduce infant death due to SIDS is a heart rate monitoring blanket with a portable radio transmitter. The monitor blanket will be a convenient way to monitor an infant’s heart rate. It will contain sensor devices that will detect a consistent heart rate. If the heart rate becomes irregular, an alarm will sound and alert the parents. The portable radio transmitter will allow the parent to be alerted even if they are not in close proximity to the infant.
